The rookery near Nevelsk is one of three unique places in the world where sea lions live near the settlement. The other two are in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and American Seattle.
Sea lion - the largest representative of the family of eared seals - a small species, listed in the Red Book of the Sakhalin region and Russia. The body length of males is 2.6 - 3.9 meters, females - up to 2.6 meters, weight - respectively up to 1100 and 350 kilograms. Steller sea lions live mainly in the coastal zone. At the rookery, the sea lions behave uneasily and are constantly roaring with a lingering bass reminding the horn of the steamer, their roar being heard for several kilometers.
The rookery in Nevelsk appeared in 1967-1968. Some sea lions who sailed past Nevelsk to rookeries about. Moneron (the island is located near the water area of Nevelsk) and around Cape Krillon (southern part of Sakhalin), one of the breakwater of the sea fishing port of Nevelsk was chosen. The port's leadership in the 1970s adopted recommendations to the sea vessels not to approach the sea lions and not to sound beeps.
